Scrabble practice: examples and a played match

This worked position uses ordinary letter values and the centre double-word square. Rows and columns below are numbered from 1.

1. Open with CAT

Place C, A and T on row 8, columns 7 to 9. A covers the centre. The opening scores (3 + 1 + 1) × 2 = 10.

2. Cross it with BAR

Place B at row 7, column 8 and R at row 9, column 8. Use the existing A between them. BAR scores 3 + 1 + 1 = 5. The centre premium is already used, so it does not double BAR.

3. Extend CAT to CATS

Place S at row 8, column 10. CATS scores 3 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 6. No new premium applies to S at this position. BAR is not scored again because this move does not change it.

What to inspect before submitting

Use Hint in a practice match to examine an alternative placement. Use Recall to take suggested tiles back before you commit. The review at the end compares immediate points; it does not predict the rest of the match.

A completed ten-turn match

This record comes from a match played in our version of Scrabble, with the computer on medium and a hint used for the player’s moves. The three-move example above is a separate position. This match finished 394 to 167. It used the short format, so remaining rack tiles were not deducted.
