Word Unscrambler

Make words from your letters. Find the longest answers, or use every letter to solve an anagram.

2 to 15 English letters. Use ? or _ for a blank, up to three blanks. Spaces are ignored.

Filter the words

Filters narrow your answers. They do not supply extra letters.

Try:

Enter your letters, or try an example.

Unscramble letters in three steps

  1. Enter the letters you have, including any repeats.
  2. Choose Use every letter for full-length anagrams, or leave it off to include shorter words.
  3. Press Unscramble. Answers appear in length groups, longest first.

One rack, several full-length answers

With RETAINS and Use every letter selected, examples include NASTIER, RETAINS, RETINAS and STAINER. Each uses the same seven letters exactly once. Leave the option off to find shorter words such as TRAIN and STAR.

What does a blank replace?

Enter C?T and the pattern C.T. CAT, COT and CUT fit: the blank supplies the middle vowel. That substituted letter is underlined in the results. Each answer has 4 base points because C is worth 3, T is worth 1 and the blank is worth zero.

Repeated letters need repeated tiles

LETTER needs two E tiles and two T tiles. LETR cannot make it. LETTER can, and LETR?? can use two blanks to supply the missing E and T. A letter cannot be reused unless you entered another copy or have a blank available.

Use filters to fit the answer

  • Starts with: with STONE, ST keeps STONE and excludes NOTES.
  • Ends with: with STONE, S keeps NOTES and TONES.
  • Contains: AT requires those two letters next to each other, in that order.
  • Exact pattern: C.T requires three letters, with C first and T last.

All answer letters still have to come from your input. If an A is already on the board, add it to the letters before using it in a pattern.

Which word list does this use?

The full list is shared with Scrabble (our version) and Word Finder. Common words only uses the smaller list behind several of our puzzles. Neither option is labelled as an official US, UK or Words With Friends dictionary. Check the word in the game you are playing.

Find a word, then practise

Use Word Finder for rack practice with hidden answers and sorting across all lengths. Try Word Scramble to make the words yourself, or read the blank and pattern examples.
