Scrabble scoring: our version

The total is the sum of every word made in your turn, plus a bonus when you use all seven rack tiles.

Start with letter values

PointsLetters
1A E I L N O R S T U
2D G
3B C M P
4F H V W Y
5K
8J X
10Q Z
0Blank

Apply the new squares in order

  1. Double or triple a new tile on a letter-premium square.
  2. Add the letter values for that word.
  3. Apply word premiums covered by new tiles.
  4. Repeat for each new cross-word.

Two new double-word squares multiply a word by four. Premium squares underneath old tiles do not apply again.

CAT through the centre

C3A1T1(3 + 1 + 1) × 2 = 10

As an opening move, CAT must cover the centre star. That square doubles the word, so the result is 10.

One tile can score in two words

If a new A completes CAT across and AT down, both words score. On ordinary squares that is 5 + 2 = 7. A premium under the new A applies to each word that uses it.

The seven-tile bonus

Using all seven tiles from your rack in one valid turn adds 50 after word scores. A seven-letter word does not automatically earn this bonus if some of its letters were already on the board.

Match-end deductions

In a full match, each player loses the value of tiles left on their rack. A player who goes out also receives the opponent's remaining tile value. The ten-turn format has no rack deduction.
